Why I love Conti's

Conti's restaurant is one of those trusted places of mine. I can't remember ordering anything that doesn't fit my taste!

Recently, I went to their branch in Serendra, Fort Bonifacio. I ordered Supreme Italian Pasta which is a tomato-based with light cream pasta with sausage and bell peppers. Loved it!

My favorite here are the following:
1. Molo soup
2. Baked Salmon
3. Lemon Squares
4. Mango Bravo (mango ice cream cake)

Try it! :)

(I am classifying this under Filipino food)

Pancake House's pan chicken

Pancake House serves really great tasting Filipino fried chicken. I suspect they use Patis (fish sauce) and kalamansi (local lemon) for this!

The chicken is crunchy and the gravy is awesome! For only PhP 175.oo you have 2pieces of crunchy fried chicken with rice and gravy.

Try it! I go to pancake house mostly because of the chicken, that's a confession! Not to say I don't love their pancakes, coffee, steak, and spaghetti. Did I say too much? :)

Pretzel Crisps make you rethink your pretzel!

Want a snack? Try Pretzel Crisps!

I first saw these in drugstores (duane reade) in new york city (3.49 USD) and brought some back home. Now in Manila, these are available in S&R wholesale stores. I also saw one flavor (Parmesan) in Shopwise grocery.

My favorite flavor is the Buffalo Wing followed by the Parmesan flavor. If you want a healthier, less salty pretzel, go for the Supreme (sesame&poppy seeds with garlic, onion, and caraway). The cinnamon flavor is sweet and goes really well with coffee.

Pretzel Crisps are made by Snack Factory, princeton NJ. Visit www.pretzelcrisps.com for more information, and where to buy all around U.S.or online.

Pretzel crisps got a really nice tagline too: Rethink your pretzel! ~and yes I did! Luhveht!

My Much Awaited HK-Macau Trip

The most common Asian country for Filipinos to visit is Hong Kong. I haven’t been here ever so that is why I call this “much-awaited”. Colleagues told me to switch the itinerary by prioritizing Macau and make HK the side trip. However, with less discounts and travel sked options from Manila to Macau, I opted for the HK fare.

My previous boss, a Swiss and a backpacker, was the one who taught me how to use the lonely planet. So when he left the Philippines to go back to Switzerland, he left me most of his lonely planet travel guides, and one of them was, yes, HK & Macau book. It was perfect!

I went with 2 other friends on February 1, 2012. Luckily, flight was on time. I also prepared a good itinerary and the guesthouse I made a reservation with instructed me to take the Airport Express, then get off at Hong Kong Station.

The Airport Express was so clean! In the cart, there was just 3 of us and 3 other passengers. I am very impressed with the maintenance of this train which charges 210 HKD for group of 3 people. It is a good deal considering this only takes 30 minutes to reach HK Island. We got off at HK stop and took a free bus (H2) that will drop us at Excelsior Hotel in Causeway bay, about 9 stops away.

Alisan Guesthouse offered to pick us up from Excelsior but we wanted to soak into causeway bay so we decided to find our way to Hoi To Court. After a few confusions, we finally found it. You may contact this clean guesthouse through Winda (or the owner named Tommy) through (852)-28380762 or E-mail : alisangh@hkstar.com. Winda replies promptly so feel free to ask a room and book. My travel buddy who was in HK 2 months ago (December 2011) swears it is cheaper and spacious than their hotel in Yau Ma Tei area. As for me, the bed mattresses are nice to sleep on, sheets are clean, and bathroom is small but well equipped with heater and exhaust. Tommy charged us only 700HKD per night.

Alisan Guesthouse Address: Flat A 5th floor, Hoito Court, 275 Gloucestar Road, 23 Cannon Street, Causeway Bay

We rested for a while before we headed to see the lovely view of Victoria Peak at night time. Vincent knew how to get there so please forgive me as I did not lead the route getting there. All I can remember is we took a train going to Admiralty and took an interchange then walked towards a road leading upwards to Victoria Peak. Suggestion: if you are visiting this at night time, go for 7pm. We were there as early as 5pm and the line was going around in circles with too many people. After 7pm, you will notice there’s almost no one lining up outside. Actually, along the way and back, you will get to appreciate many other city spots and parks worth snapping a photo of, so enjoy the view by keeping your itinerary loose.

Victoria Peak is not for the broken-hearted, I’m telling you. If you plan to do some soul-searching, traveling on your own, and you are recuperating from a bad break-up, do not in any way visit Hong Kong. Do not in any way visit the Victoria Peak. I’ve been to some peaks in Manila, New York, Chicago, and so far, Victoria Peak nails it. I think it is because the view is not too high up that it still brings out the city lights and the building outlines so well, and not too low that it can still be called a peak.

Back to causeway bay, I have always wanted to have a food trip of authentic dimsums. Luckily we found this little store that serves what appears to be steamed siomai and shanghai rolls. Even their fried versions look steamed but I loved it! The consistency of the wrap was just delicious, and the meat was combined with turnip, just like the home made ones back in Manila! Just like how my mom and dad made them!

Day 2 is Ocean Park. We had breakfast across the guesthouse and they serve continental breakfast. Then from the guesthouse, you will just need to walk towards the bus stop which will take you to Ocean park in just a maximum of 15 minutes. Really I was surprised. Walk to Cannon Street, Gloucester Road, take the 671 Bus towards Ap Lei Chau (12 mins, 1 stop), Getting off to Aberdeen Tunnel, Walk to Ocean Park, about 5 mins (280 m).

One thing I missed in Ocean Park? The rides! These rides are so scary that my 2 travel buddies did not support my desire to try them. So if you are the thrill-seeker, bring equally thrill-seeker buddies to Ocean Park and brave the rides!

Do not miss these things in Ocean Park:
  1. Cable Car ride
  2. Jelly fish
  3. Panda

On the way back to Alisan, we decided to check out the malls in Causeway Bay for a bit. We found some really nice flat shoes worth 100HKD, and in HK, they were all about the in thing in 2012: leopard leopard leopard prints in all shades and in all items! Gosh, what a haven for fashionistas!

If you are a person who eats a lot of rice, then you won’t get much from Causeway Bay. We had to settle with a Japanese restaurant (Itamae-Sushi, Cuaseway Bay) on the night of Day 2 just to satisfy our rice craving. I do not find the restaurant a budget restaurant, so after this, we still decided to look for 7-eleven and bought more food. Me and Vincent tried the street food in Causeway bay too.

Not bad for the streetfood by the way! For 4 to 8HKD, you can get a stick of whatever. I am not very familiar with some but I did try the squid. It was tasty!

After Dinner, we went back to the guest house to rest for a bit. Then we took the train going to Mongkok. The night market was in Argyle street. It wasn’t much, I barely bought anything, just a zebra printed flat shoes, a sequined purse with metal hasp and short chain handle, and of course fridge magnets!

So Day 3 is reserved for Macau. It was a long walk really. We took the train towards the HK ferry port, but you have to walk inside this mall where the ticketing booths are. The ferry ride itself is just a short one, a couple of minutes more than an hour, not bad. You will have to leave your luggage in designated areas at the back then take your seats as indicated in the seat number on the ticket. The price can range from HK$133 - HK$175. In our case, I think we paid about HK$175, and it was a Friday morning.
How the ferry looks like inside :)

Moving around Macau

This is the chicken in HK and Macau McDonald's

We arrived at Macau before lunch and we struggled looking for a nice place to stay. We did not have any bookings, but I did arrange for some lodge/guesthouses that we can check out. However, either they were too high up like 4th floor with no elevators, or too expensive for budget travelers. We got to these lodges by way of a free bus from the airport going to Lisboa Hotel, which is the nearest to the lodges that we sort of picked from the Lonely Planet list.

In all my travels, I have never found it hard to use a map, most of all, a lonely planet map! But in Macau, oh boy, this is just like the small streets in the Philippines. Macau has very clear street names alright, they are even on tiles and stone markers, but the streets just curve in complicated manners. You need a lot of mapping skills on this one. It is not like the grid maps of the U.S. So get ready.

Alas, we found this really nice hotel called the Hotel Nan Tin. In the internet, it is listed as Nam Tin but the receipt says Nan Tin. The hotel charged us 800 MOP for the night which includes a delayed check out of 3:30pm the following day.

Hotel Nan Tin
Travessa da Praia Grande, no. 4, Macau
(853) 2871 1212/(853) 2871 1115

The hotel is not bad, it is spacious for a budget hotel and has wifi but it actually works in the lobby. The rooms are like real hotel rooms. We were on the second floor, but don’t worry about your luggage because they have an elevator!

Now it’s time to eat, and we won’t forget the McDonald’s we saw just after we took a free bus from the ferry port going to Lisboa Hotel. Again, I compared the chicken and it is just very much the same in taste as the McDonald’s chicken in HK (I must say, the McDonald’s oriental chicken wings in Beijing is still unbeatable).

It was the best time to be in HK and Macau, and it is colder in Macau by just 2-5 degrees. We walked towards the Lisboa (yes the Nam Tin Hotel is also very near the Grand
Lisboa and Wynn Hotels) with the plan of going to the Venetian. On our way, I have to say, Macau, I just fell in love with you. The Grand Lisboa was a sight to behold. The building itself was flashing its own lights and messages. The casino hotel was a spectacular play of colors! I can just sit on the gutter, put my hands under my jaws and just stare!

So we had to take the bus back to the ferry port. From the ferry port, we took another free bus that led us to the Venetian. On the way, we spotted a much grander looking hotel than the Venetian and it is the Galaxy Hotel. This hotel just knows what “peacocking” is!

Free bus to the Venetian

Just across the Venetian

Ala Jan Di of Boys Over Flowers

Galaxy Macau

Inside Galaxy Macau

So as everyone else, we went inside the gondola areas of the Venetian, promising ourselves to cross the street and visit the Galaxy next. I just had to take photos ala Jan Di of Boys over Flowers, pretending to be crying over Jun Pyo. Fine, I’m a sucker for Korean Novelas! I also bought my usual Starbucks city tumblers from the Starbucks at the Venetian Hotel. We paused for some coffee since it was cold and coffee just sounded such a lovely idea.

We crossed the street towards Galaxy macau. We took some photos and I recorded a video of the hotel because it shoots ray lights everywhere and it was so fun! Inside, we went to look for the tall greeters in Galaxy Macau. Vincent, who already visited the place 2 months ago in December 2011, told us we should go to the crystals area. It was a nice lobby filled with man-made crystals adorned with moving lights. In the other lobby, we missed the show, but we luckily found those tall girls and took photos with them. Really, Jickie and I looked like hobbits beside the girls.
Funny hobbits :-P

So Day 4 is the last day, Februray 4, 2012. We had breakfast at the senado square. The stores don’t open as early as in Manila (many shops open for breakfast in Manila), but we did manage to find a lot of rice yay! I had rice and chicken curry.

We hurried towards the senado square itself. Going through the walk leading to the ruins of St. Paul, we enjoyed shopping for treats like nuts (try the wintergreen melon), dried fruit, and beef jerky. Street food near the ruins of St. Paul was a bit pricey so I just opted for the best egg tarts in the world.

I love Macau, everything is affordable! I love Senado Square! This place is my idea of food trip! The weather just helped too, cold and fit for walking forever!
Best Egg Tarts!

I checked out the Saint Augustine church while my friends took advantage of the sale in Esprit. On my way, I found a really nice looking Chinese food store with all those hanging ducks and pork. I bought food for lunch and made a mental note of the place should my friends decide to eat there. It was very affordable. As expected, I went back with my friends and we had our lunch there.

We were rushing back to Nan Tin because it was 3pm. We all took some calling cards so we can refer this hotel for people who want to stay in Macau as it was hard to find. We took the ferry back to HK, and the express train back to HK airport. It was sad leaving Macau too soon. As well, I loved HK. If I get back to HK< for sure, I will hit the rides in Ocean Park.

I also loved my company. It is the best travel mix of 3 people. In my experience, 3-4 people who are all backpackers or at least low-maintenance people will go well with travelling on a budget.

Yakimix: for that affordable Japanese Buffet

Again, I had a nice lunch buffet at Yakimix. This is a restaurant with a smokeless grill that serves beef, chicken, and my favorite salmon strips, which you can grill right from your table. It also serves Filipino food, a good selection of sushi and sashimi, raw meet slices, vegetable slices, has a salad bar, and a really nice array of dessert.

For what price? Maximum of PhP660.

So what did I have today?
The customary grilling of all slices salmon, the mushroom bundled by bacon, beef with all spice, rice with beans, some sweet pork, pork sisig, and some sauteed greens.

I had a salmon sashimi and some mango sushi.

I had a crab salad and creamy fruit salad.

The dessert: Double Dutch Ice Cream+ Rocky Road Ice Cream + Choco Sprinkles + Rainbow Sprinkles + mini choco kisses. There are more in the dessert bar, but I only had space left for ice cream. They also serve cakes and mousse.

Happy Tummy! I know you can imagine all that...

If you are a walk-in client, come at 11am for lunch and 530pm for dinner to ensure seats. This restaurant is always always packed!

Honey-Peanut Butter Balls

In one of my youtube surfing, I landed upon a healthy snack which I also tried.

Directions:
1.Heat 200g of peanut butter
2. Use the same bottle of peanut butter to measure same amount of honey and add to the peanut butter on the pan
3. Mix continuously and allow to melt for 5minutes
4.Remove from heat, add 200grams instant oats and mix
5.Allow to cool down for 15 minutes then put in the chiller for an hour
6. Form into small bite-size balls and serve cold

Other options:
Mix some shaved almonds
Mix some whey powder for added protein

Tip: form into small sizes only because it can be too sweet to finish a big serving.

Best Instant Coffee : Moccona Coffee by Sara Lee

A coffee lover, I usually have at least 3 cups a day. I confess to using instant coffee because it is convenient especially at work, and most of all, affordable.

During my recent business trip to Bangkok, the office served us with a really great tasting instant coffee called MOCCONA. I loved it that i bought a big jar, about 400 Baht. As recommended by my colleague from Bangkok, I should buy the Royal Gold variant because that is the best. So when I asked where to look for it, all I had to do was walk a few minutes to Century Mall and get it from the grocery which is at the basement of the mall.

Everyone that tried it loved it! The taste is bold enough that it only requires a quarter teaspoon of the granules per cup of coffee. Really tasty, really rich in coffee flavor. I just don't know how Sara Lee does it!

Nescafe Taster's Choice
Allow me to compare also the granules of this coffee from the Nescafe Taster's Choice. Moccona has really big granules!

And here is Moccona's coffee granules:

Moccona
Here is how it looks like, if you should ever look for one. After finishing my first bottle of Moccona coffee, I filled the jar (right) with Muscovado sugar since it matches the flavor of this coffee.

Don't mind the granules of the bottle to the right, it is filled with Muscovado sugar, lol!

I asked a colleague who went to Bangkok recently to buy me another jar so here I have another full month's supply!

I really hope Sara Lee would sell this coffee here!

Prepare a Raisin Bread Sandwich with Mozarella and Butter

Today is a holiday, The Philippine Independence Day. As such, the luxury of waking up late!

My breakfast is a really nice pan toast of Raisin Bread. It is a 3-layer sandwich with one layer filled with slices of Mozarella cheese and the other layer added with a little unsalted butter.

Directions:
toast all slices in a teflon pan
While still on the pan, Put 2 slices of the raisin bread together and put the mozarella slices in between
Put a thin spread of unsalted butter on top of slice #2 and then put the 3rd slice on top
Flip the full sandwhich to toast the 3rd slice

This is the result, really yummy!:

Why some people will not be able to stop smoking

I was a smoker on and off from 2004-2011. The worst was in 2004-2006 when I consumed 2 packs a day. I decided to go by the sticks in 2007, and eventually stopped in 2008.

Well, events happen in life, so after 1.5 years, I got back to smoking in 2010-2011. This was like 3-5 sticks every month, so it is pretty much a lame come back, but hey, if you still smoke, then you are still called a smoker. In 2010 I was already attending fun runs actively, yet I still, once a month, do smoke.. like your once a month drinking spree as a busy employee? That's pretty much it.

Some people are just not cut out to quit smoking because:
1. They have not accepted that one day they should quit
2. They do not have the discipline to quit
3. Being enslaved by a vice does not bother them at all
4. Smoking is their only "me-time"
5. The benefits of quitting does not outweigh the feeling that smoking provides

So why did I totally stop smoking?
1. I knew I will quit one day
2.I am a lady and I always like to smell, look, and behave like a lady, not to mention it is really bad for the skin
3. The full marathon training really did open my lungs to greater capacities that smoking now does not only feel disgusting,it also takes a lot off my performance
4. Yoga/swimming/running/gym /sleeping /reading a book is my me-time
5. The feeling of smoking is not enough for me to stick with it versus all the disadvantages - smelly hair, smelly clothes, smelly fingers, coughing, expenses, that urge to smoke even under midday sun.. - really, such a hassle

Indeed, smoking has become a high-maintenance vice for me that only gives a minute of pleasure. It's not worth it.. And I don't even need to go deeper on the health risks. I don't really have to.

Pacquiao-Bradley Fight, arranged?

Just really disappointed with the results of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight. I just can't help but notice how there are no follow up punches when Pacquiao had the chance. Also, there is no power ending (a classic Pacquiao fight) which usually happens during the final 3 rounds. It was generally a slow, boring fight. Is it because any strong punch by Pacquiao may Knock Out Bradley?...and then the second fight wouldn't happen.

Oh well... such is life...

Posted here are some images from Toprank.com and Manny Pacquiao's facebook fan page.

But wait, here comes a 9gag photo, based again on the movie Avengers:

My Very Detailed 1st Trip to Bangkok

Hi guys!

I went to BKK for the first time in September 2010. And below is my very detailed story about it. This is probably my longest blog ever, but if you are planning to visit BKK for the first time, this could prove to be helpful!

BKK is a country that I love coming back to over and over! Been here 3x the past 2 years and it had always been a great treat! This was also my first time to navigate a country all on my own, with the aid of Lonely Planet. Thanks!

Read along........

I travelled BKK through Philippine Airlines and I am quite happy with their seats. Aside from giving us KFC 1pc. chicken with rice and softdrink lunch due to the 2-hour delay of the flight, they also served good meals (rice meals) with endless add ons. I chose the beef curry over the chicken afritada and it tastes good. There were sidings like macaroni salad, small bread bun, mooncake (actually good type of moon cake), and choice of drinks (unlimited): wine, orange juice, coffee, water, pineapple juice. PAL's seats are comfy and has ample legroom. They also had functional headsets which I liked because the movie Letters to Juliet was showing and I have not seen it yet (the movie's ending sucks by the way, just your ordinary feel-good, which I believe could have ended better).

I arrived at the BKK Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport) by 2pm of September 22, 2010. It is huge - a 550m walk toward the immigrations but no problem because there's a walkalator.
I went down thru the escalator after immigrations because I was well-read, and I know that the metered taxi charges at most 400Baht. It only reached 280B for me including 50B additional payment as it came from the airport. I think this 50B is commonly charged.

The Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel is a blessing! Not only did it keep me full for my itineraries with its breakfast buffet but it also is very very near (walking distance, but there's a free Pullman Hotel Tuktuk Service too) the BTS or their railway transit or their SkyTrain. The tuktuk service goes to the century mall and back to the hotel. This mall is connected to the the Victory Monument Station of the BTS.

 For Day 1, September 23:

I went to the Grand Palace, Wat Poh, and unfortunately though I planned it, I missed the Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) because it closes at 5pm. Anyhow, I enjoyed my stay at the Grand Palace and Wat Poh.

I left the hotel at 9:30am after a huge breakfast of salad, fruits, muesli, yoghurt, waffles, and of course, coffee. The tuktuk brought me to the century mall, then I walked upstairs to buy the train ticket. The train ticket is dispensed by the machine. You have to use coins. Minimum price is 25 Baht which is 3 coins. With this, you push the button 3 which means you are loading 3 coins. It dispenses change if you placed 3 x 10B and the fee is only 25B. Dont worry because there are also counters  ready with change (coins) in case you only have bills.

From the Victory Monument station, i went down the 3rd stop which is the Siam station. This has an interchange connecting it with another BTS line. You have top go down the train and follow the directions in the ceiling stating "to Silom Line". You will have to take the Silom line which will be moving towards the direction of the wongwian yai station (last station of silom). Get off on the 5th stop , the Saphan Taksin station. Here you will add 20B.

Bangkok is very open to travelers so signs are everywhere. It is impossible to get lost because there are numbered exits for the specific places you wish to go to.

Downstairs from the Saphan Taksin Station, you will have to walk towards the Chao Praya River Taxi terminal. You will never miss it as long as you are particular with the signs. The Chao Praya River Taxi actually passes by all the temples and there is an unlimited ride for only 150B. However, i do not think the other temples are as grand as the Grand Palace, and there is nothing bigger than the Reclining Buddha at Wat Poh, so prioritize these 2. Both temples are beside each other.

I went off Maharaj Station riding the river taxi. I walked about 200meters to get to the entrance of the Grand Palace. It was quite hot yes, but no problem because trees covered the sidewalks and you'll be entertained by the many hawkers (food shops) and trinkets are everywhere. I actually bought a wide straw hat from here at 200B which is my saving grace from the sun (Buy one, you'll definitely need it. Or else bring an umbrella). I was not able to try their street food, they said it was clean and tasty. But since I was not yet in my forst stop, I missed the opportunity.

Make sure you are dressed well getting inside the Grand Palace. Otherwise, you will have to buy a sarong. I wore a long dress with sleeves running down my elbows, and my get up won the approval of the security officers.

What a haven for photographers the Grand Palace is! Too bad you cannot take pictures inside the temples. Also, wear covered shoes that are easy to remove. You have to be barefoot inside the temples.

I managed to finish my photo opportunity by 3pm, including a short break at the bon voyage coffee shop inside the grand palace. 11am-3pm, not bad for a first stop, but imagine not being able to reach other places within the Grand Palace such as the Vimanmek Teak Mansion. Make sure you visit that as I believe it is the largest teak mansion, and is already part of the entrance fee to Grand Palace.

I went outside the Grand Palace and passed by the hawkers again. This time, it's a very short walk going to the Wat Poh, to your left when you exit GP. It was cheaper at 50B in entrance fee, smaller place but what really counts is the Reclining Buddha which is literally LARGER THAN LIFE! Best thing is this is the only temple where they allow picture taking but you still have to take off your shoes. There were many other things to see inside like candy colored architecture and temples, but I spent more time inside the Wat Poh Massage school. This is the house of the authentic Thai Massage. Costs 300B for a 55minute foot massage. I paid additional 40B as tip. It was very relaxing, really.

I planned to check out Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) but when I asked a local, he told me it closes at 5pm, too bad. This man was very very nice enough to arrange a 20B tuktuk ride for me to reach the Temple of the Lucky Buddha, the Marble Temple, and the Exporters Jewelry place. However, as I dropped by the lucky Buddha, another local told me to visit the Oscars (jewelry shop) which is the supplier of Tiffany's and Cartier as they are on 95% discount and it ends on that same day. So much for the Marble temple. I rushed to the Oscars, but out of my good shopping heart, I managed to keep my dollars intact and left the store without any additional jewelry. I told the tuktuk to just bring me to the Golden Temple. Some local also told me there is a bangka ride here that will take me back faster to Siam Station, cutting my river taxi+Silom BTS trip. It was a good experience but the bangka docks really fast and leaves just as fast!  If you dont hop on it fast enough, it will leave. If you do not get off at once, they will take you to the next stop, seriously! Three men hovered along the sides to take your payment. I paid 9B, got off pattranahm Siam.

From pattranahm Siam was a long walk to Siam Paragon mall. Actually, I got delayed because I really stopped by McDonalds and Starbucks for the customary comparing of food. I ate at mcdonalds and it cost me around 120 Baht. At starbucks, I never found the bangkok mug so I postponed buying for the ff day. After dinner at McDonalds, I climbed the stairs leading to the skywalk. The skywalk is a very loong covered overpass which connects the chitlom station to the siam station of the BTS Sukhumvit Line. When I finally made it to the Siam Station, going through MBK mall, I just followed the usual route: hop on siam station and get off victory station.

My tuktuk ride

Reclining Buddha, never miss this!

Day 2, September 24, 2010:

I woke up late again today. As usual, I took my time taking a bath and enjoyed the buffet breakfast of the Pullman Hotel. Same huge breakfast of salad, fruits, muesli, but this time instead of waffles, i took a pancake and did not bother for coffee. Coffee dehydrates me so fast and with the weather, i opted to just load on a mixture of fruit juice. I mixed every fruit juice available.

Today my itinerary is Jim Thompson House Museum and shopping at the MBK. The route is the same. The only difference is that once you take the interchange station that connects the Sukhumvit and Silom BTS lines, you take the silom train that will lead to the National Stadium Station, that's just one station away from the interchange.

From the National Stadium, it took me some time to look for JT House. Most of the people in this area are not very good in English but still very helpful. I walked towards the other end (if you are facing the MBK mall, just turn right, on the right side of the street). JT House signage is such a small one that you really have to ask for directions. As I can remember, after a bank, I turned right again and that road led me to the museum. It was a long walk, about 500meters because it is at the end of that street.

JT House is an impressive collection of old stuff like Buddha, paintings, decorations. What really is amazing here is the life led by Jim Thompson in developing the silk industry and business of Thailand, combining it with his expertise as a creative person, since he graduated with a degree in Architecture.

JT House is definitely assisted by tour guides. I don't think one will be able to appreciate the place entirely without these guides, from which you can choose the batch with the language you want. At 100Baht, you can take photos all you want but only outside the house and in the garden area.

When I finished at JT House, i noticed some trivial stuff being sold along the small street. There's this small store in front of a house where I bought great quality chopsticks for only 100 Baht at 7 pairs. I also bought a puppet for only 250baht. I believe these are great finds since I never saw any of those stuff in the malls and anywhere else.

Since it took me some time to find JT Museum, I already knew where the MBK mall is. I stopped by the money changer first. the rates here are far better than the airport for about 500Baht more. This money changer is just right across the MBK mall, along the intersection.

The MBK mall is really a good mall. Similar to the budget malls in Manila (the greenhills shopping center). The items are definitely good quality, so invest on the shirts. If you buy 9 or 10 shirts, they will give you one for free. The cloth is thick and of good quality, the prints look like they will not wear out easily. If a friend of mine will travel to Bangkok, I will specifically ask for a shirt. The key chains and the brooches are also great steals! Not only do they look glamorous and expensive, they are very very affordable at 35-50Baht each. Aside from trinkets like pouches, frames, and other small souvenirs, I kept my Bahts inside my wallet.

I went back to the hotel to meet my friend as the original plan was to shop at siam paragon. Anywho, she allowed me the liberty of navigating MBK alone since she already went there a few days ago. On the way back to Pullman Hotel, I dropped by KFC. Their chicken steak is served with delicious curry sauce which I was able to watch in the commercial on the TV set inside the BTS Skytrain. It was delicious for only 65Baht with drink!

I changed my clothes because I no longer needed to wear conservative shirts. I went back to my usual shorts and blouses that are more comfortable considering the weather in Bangkok, which is about 29 degrees C.

As my friend and I arrived at the Siam Paragon by way of the BTS, we decided to eat a heavy meal first as early as 4pm at the Sizzler. This is because we will be navigating 3 malls and we needed the energy. The sizzler is oh so recommended. Upon ordering a main course which ranges from 175- 350 Baht, your soup and salad are offered in a buffet table! Yes, Soup and Salad all you can. Of course, you need to buy drink on top of that range.

The funny thing about the Siam Paragon and the Discovery Siam malls is that I was not able to buy anything from there. Both places are packed with great deals that I never imagines like high-end brands at 70% off! who knew? Crocs and all types of shoe brands are so cheap, I would always keep myself from buying thinking there's a next best offer. At the end of the day, you realize that these brands are not the reason you came to Bangkok and then I remembered all the uniquely Bangkok finds I bought on the street leading to JT Museum and when I dropped by MBK mall. So the verdict is never miss these places to buy some oh-so-truly unique Bangkok stuff.

KFC Thailand's chicken steak meal has a curry sauce, try it!!

Day 3, September 25, 2010 : just another leisurely breakfast at the Pullman Hotel

I was supposed to buy tickets to the Siam Ocean World (costs 950 Baht) but I knew i would not have enough time to insert an activity in the morning of Day 3. So i ended up enjoying my 3rd breakfast buffet at the Pullman Hotel, this time at a leisurely lazier pace. My friend even went to the gym and the spa while I had my breakfast. After breakfast, I packed my stuff, with all the strength I can since I bought so much, and realized i had plenty of unused clothes. This is another learning experience: it is really true that one should pack light. You can always buy extra clothes within your destination.

We hopped on the hotel car service and this brought us to the airport. I had a bit of  a sad feeling leaving the country because I loved it so much. The people are really nice and considering I was able to explore the place even at night on my own. Luckily I have my Starbucks bearista and mugs to remind me of this wonderful city.

My next stop? Backpacking Singapore - Kuala Lumpur- then back to SG. That's in January 27, 2011 =)
